GPSR compliance for importers

Importing products into the EU makes you responsible for verifying the manufacturer did their job — and for catching problems they miss. SafeCart gives you the record-keeping and Safety Gate monitoring to place only compliant products and act fast when one is flagged.

Article 11 of the GPSR treats importers as a gatekeeper: you may only place a product on the EU market after checking the manufacturer prepared technical documentation, applied the required identification, and provided instructions and safety information. Your own name and address must appear on the product, and you must keep monitoring it once it is on sale. SafeCart is where you hold that verification evidence and watch for recall notices against everything you import.

What the GPSR requires of importers

The obligations that come with your role under the EU General Product Safety Regulation.

Verify manufacturer compliance

Before placing a product on the market, check the manufacturer carried out the conformity work, drew up technical documentation and applied the required labelling.

Add importer identification

Ensure the product bears your name, registered trade name and postal and electronic address, alongside the manufacturer's details.

Keep records & cooperate

Keep a copy of the technical documentation available to authorities, maintain a register of complaints and non-conformities, and cooperate on any action.

Withdraw unsafe stock

Where you know or should presume a product is not safe, do not place it on the market and take corrective action, informing authorities where required.

How SafeCart helps

Turn the ongoing parts of compliance — traceability and recall monitoring — into something you manage from one dashboard.

Verification evidence per SKU

Record manufacturer identity, Responsible Person and the documentation you checked against each imported product, ready to show authorities.

Recall alerts on your imports

SafeCart matches new EU Safety Gate notices against your catalogue with validated GTIN matching, so a flagged product surfaces before your buyers hit it.

Marketplace-ready exports

Export compliant manufacturer and Responsible Person data as marketplace CSVs so your listings carry the details importers must display.

Auditable compliance trail

Every detection, review and recall action is logged, giving you the register of non-conformities the regulation expects you to keep.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GPSR require of importers?

Under Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2023/988, importers must place only compliant products on the market: verify the manufacturer prepared technical documentation and applied required labelling, add their own name and address to the product, keep documentation and records available to authorities, monitor for safety issues, and take corrective action on unsafe products.

Am I an importer if I dropship from outside the EU?

Often yes. If you place a product from a non-EU supplier on the EU market, you can hold importer obligations even when the goods ship directly to the customer. The GPSR looks at who places the product on the EU market, not where the warehouse sits.

Do I need an EU Responsible Person as an importer?

A product from outside the EU can only be placed on the market if there is an economic operator established in the Union responsible for compliance tasks (Article 16). An importer established in the EU can fill that role for the products they import.

How does SafeCart help importers?

SafeCart stores your verification evidence per SKU, monitors the EU Safety Gate around the clock against your imported catalogue, exports compliant listing data, and keeps an auditable trail — covering the record-keeping and monitoring duties importers carry.
